The Burnet High School softball team won the Brownwood Tournament Feb. 19 and 21 after starting the week with a 7-4 victory against Johnson City Feb. 17.
The Lady Dawgs (6-4-1) won five of their last six games and that sixth contest ended in a 6-6 tie against Cisco Feb. 19.
Head coach Jayci Craig praised her players.
“It’s a big deal,” she said. “It is evident that the girls are making progress and meshing as a team well compared to the start of the year. We are building a solid program and learning to be great.”
In the tournament finale against Christoval, senior Peyton Allen made “an outstanding diving catch” that kept the Lady Cougars from advancing on the bases that preserved the 6-5 victory.
Other wins came against Hico 17-5 highlighted by Allen’s home run, Brownwood 11-5 and Lubbock Estacado 14-0. During the victories, the Lady Dawgs outscored opponents 48-15.
“Batting came alive all weekend in our Brownwood tournament,” Craig said. “This is something we have worked hard on the last month. We are starting to have quality at-bats because of the work the girls are putting in. When we are doing well on the offensive side of things, it gives us momentum and allows us to control each part of the game.”
In short, the Lady Dawgs gave plenty of run support to senior pitchers Carlee Williams and Journey Denton.
“This weekend’s accomplishment is a true testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment these young ladies have shown all season,” Craig said. “Their teamwork and determination continue to make our district proud. I could not be more proud of this group and the way they fight and play for each other.”
The Lady Dawgs travel to Blanco Tuesday, Feb. 23, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m. They will play in the Lago Vista Tournament Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 26-28 beginning with the host team at 9 a.m. then Cedar Park at 10:30 a.m. both Feb. 26, Killeen Shoemaker at 1:30 p.m. and Bastrop Cedar Creek at 3 p.m. both Friday, and Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch at 1:30 p.m. and Killeen Harker Heights at 3 p.m., both Saturday.
